FASHION | BALENCIAGA X ADIDAS | SPRING/SUMMER 23

The vibe? Dystopia. The setting? New York City's Stock Exchange. Heavily inspired by Kim Kardashian's Met Gala look from the 2021's In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion theme, saw Balenciaga models strutting around the stock exchange surrounded by stock ticker screens in the heart of New York City's Financial District. Yes. The actual Stock Exchange, where countless amounts of businesspeople go to make their millions buying and selling whatever they can get their hands on. It was fitting then that the clothes were a mix of business and pleasure. A fresh take on business suits, pussy-bow blouses, trench coats and lengthly trousers all draped and worn over shrouded black silhouettes made from leather gimp suits. Think Wall Street banker meets Street Style meets Red Light District madame. A perfect combination and take on a subject that is rather taboo even by today's standards.

And of course, we must mention the Adidas collaboration. Models adoring Adidas tracksuits in bright colours over the leather gimp suits, the Adidas logo reworked as Balenciaga's own and a nod to Sportswear. Who'd have thought that fashion could meet Football? Balenciaga made it happen. Demna Gvasalia made it happen. Showing us that corporate greed triumphs in not only American society but right throughout the world. The cultural references were superb, and we ate up every crumb he had to offer.
