June 2013: Cover Story: Carey Mulligan

She started as Sally Sparrow in Doctor Who alongside David Tennant ("don't blink"), went on to play Kathy in Never Let Me Go alongside Andrew Garfield and Keira Knightley ("didn't we all dream from time to time about one guardian or other bending the rules and doing something special for us? A spontaneous hug, a secret letter, a gift?” and in her latest production she played the role of Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of The Great Gatsby alongside Leonardo Dicaprio ("They're such beautiful shirts," she sobbed, her voice muffled in the think folds. "It makes me sad because I've never seen such - such beautiful shirts before."

When I first clasped eyes on her in Doctor Who, I was in love with her performance and character (even though she only featured in one episode). She played the role of Sally Sparrow, a twenty something woman with an obsession of old houses who fell into the madness of the timeline of the Doctor. The emotion, the story line, even the fact that they had written a whole episode to near enough feature and follow her character and story of her encounter with the Doctor, who she eventually bumps in to, but who he hasn't met yet (wibbly wobbly, timey wimey . . . stuff). And then I was thrilled to see her in Never Let Me Go, a romantic love story that will have you in tears and make your emotions run wild, so much that you start to question every second of your own life, making sure that you're living to the max. This time she played the role of a Kathy(usually when you see actors/actresses in films after being on TV, they've made it) who had one purpose in life, she and the characters in the story were born to donate their organs to human beings. And then there's her latest role as Daisy Buchanan in The Great GatsbyA role of a shallow self absorbed beauty who was once in love with Jay Gatsby before her marriage to the character Thomas Buchanan and a must see for anyone, literally, men, women of any adult age, it is by far the best adaption of the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald to date.

Alongside her acting, her style is also something that is so cute and chic. On the red carpet, along the street, this girl's got style! She's been in everything from YSLNina Ricci to Christopher Kane and Prada. She's one of those celebrities that can give an outfit such an effortless look, that it would seem as if they've thrown it together in ten minutes without a stylist, whilst dashing to work because you're running late. One of my favourite looks is one she wore to opening evening of the Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada Dress Gatsby exhibition to which she wore a fabulous black lace Prada (what else of course). I haven't yet had a chance to read the article that American Vogue have wrote on her, but the photo shoot was stunning, and so fitting for the film with a 1920's theme throughout it. Colours of pinks, pastels, fabrics of lace and silk, and detailing to die for.

I can't wait to see what other delights she will star in, and I'm sure will agree that this great lady, will have many more great parts and bring us great performances throughout her career.
