January 2013: Spring/Summer 2013 Report

After countless hours of browsing through Vogue’s online show reports, after falling in love with entire collections, and after pouring my heart and soul into writing about my love for this season, it's finally here, my Spring/Summer 2013 report! I have distilled the hundreds of runway shows to unearth the trends of next season. It seems winter will be challenging this year, but to know that we await these stunning pieces is enough to help us all survive the bitter cold.

The colour white has several connotations; purity, iridescence, positivity, but above all, an undeniably classy elegance. White is the colour to watch this season, with Lacoste, DKNY and Prabal Gurung models gracing runways with flair. There was a time when black was the only colour to be considered sexy, flattering and timeless, but there is a certain radiance about white that gives it that slight edge. For the garden parties of Spring/Summer 2013, it is a farewell to the LBD and a warm welcome to the LWD. "White is not a mere absence of colour; it is a shining and affirmative thing”

It is to Karl Lagerfeld and his Chanel Pre-Fall 2012 collection that we owe this thanks for rekindling the fire of Indian opulence. Lagerfeld used all there was to be inspired by in India silhouettes, materials, colours and accessories. The Parisian fashion house sparked a trend in the industry, with statement Indian gold threads being weaved into garments. Alongside were striking jewels, rich colours and fabrics fit for a maharani. "There are some parts of the world that, once visited, get into your heart and won't go . . . India is such a place.”

The birthplace of boho made a ritual reappearance during the Spring/Summer show season, after a period of hibernation over winter. The colours are more vibrant than ever, integrated into intricate patterns which are then carefully clashed with more ornate designs. There is something about Hawaiian florals that signals the long-awaited arrival of the summer sun. And therefore, summer would be incomplete without a piece of this tropical island in your wardrobe. "Hawaii is not a state of mind, but a state of grace."
Mara Hoffman
Isabel Marant
Issa London

It has been said, many times, by many greats, that fashion, style, and one’s choice of attire is a means of self-expression, a statement with which I am in agreement. Some designers have chosen to exploit this statement and make their thoughts more explicit rather than interpretive. Lettering adorns the runways of the likes of Ashish, Julien David and Finnish designer Ivana Helsinki. A geek-chic vibe follows. "Young players need freedom of expression to develop as creative players."
